Before actually running off to the shop right now, jump ahead to the "arm socket" section for important
details that shouldn't be overlooked. What's important here is that it's imperative that you align at
least two of these stringers (opposite one another) to lie in the same plane (i.e. you should be able
to lay a straight-edge anywhere across these two stringers and their surfaces would be flat to the straight-edge). This assembly, by itself, is quite sturdy once you've glued and/or fitted the rings onto the stringers. I used hot melt glue throughout this project, including attaching the stringers to the rings. One caveat, try to make the bottom of the stringers even so the trunk will stand upright on its own (if you want the tree to lean adjust the stringer bottoms accordingly). Access: I built a small access panel at the back of the trunk (to get at the light switch, perform repairs, etc.). It's simply the top and bottom to a frame built between two stringers. If you want one, build it now. |
