The trunk:
Start with the "trunk". Essentially, you'll build a hollow tube not unlike an old-time
airplane fuselage. Cut out three or four "rings" a little smaller than your desired diameter. For mine,
I tapered the trunk slightly (wider at the bottom than the top), so the "rings" were four different sizes.
Now, don't be too concerned with accuracy when cutting out the circles. Give them a little character,
free-hand them. But don't go overboard (you'll see why in the next step).
Cut to length, six 1x4's
(I found six worked pretty well... four wouldn't be enough and who the heck does anything with five pieces?).
When I say "to length", these 1-bys will end up a couple inches below the tree trunks' top edge, but
they also need to extend below the trunks' bottom edge by 3 or 4 inches (see Tree Frame #1). I also trimmed
a slightly curving line on the outside edge of the stringers (along the entire length) on a bandsaw.
A jigsaw could make the same cut.
