Always cut the center area of enclosed letters and/or numerals out first. In other words, those letters that have a loop in its design. Letters like: a,e,o,B,D,P,4,6,8,9... (of course, there are many others). If you don't, the trace-line is cut out when the outer perimeter trace-line is cut... sort of like "throwing the baby out with the bath water". Take time to practice a little. The more you do, the better you'll get. And don't worry... being a little less than 100% perfectly accurate makes for a nice, textured, "worn" look. |

Tips and tricks to carving: I tend to align the letter lengthwise down my line-of-sight. Then I usually cut (in a sawing motion) TOWARDS me. So, rather than "push" the tool away from my body I "pull" it towards my body. Also, lean the tool towards you, that is, the top of the tool handle is closer to you than the blade at the bottom... this aids the tool in slicing through cleanly rather than binding against the foam grain (as mentioned above). |
