Now attach the template to the foam tombstone with straight pins. I've used scotch tape before, but unfortunately it tends to peel a layer off the blue foam as I mentioned above.

Look at the photo. You can readily see horizontal bands above and below, and even a vertical line along the side of the lettering. As a matter of fact, originally only the bottom band was there, so to balance it (and not have to throw out my work) I applied a strip of tape over the lettering and on each side (to form a frame of sorts). Not my first choice, nor even in my plans, but at least it was salvagable.

Even after painting, this difference in the foam's texture is noticable. You'll kick yourself if you use tape and end up with something that can't be salvaged. Do yourself a favor and use straight pins. Fill the tiny holes with Elmer's Wood Putty, if necessary, or let the paint layers take care of filling any small punctures.
