Shaping:

Lay out the design on the thickness of foam you want to use. Cut out the shape(s) with a bandsaw, a jigsaw, or a hacksaw blade having tape wrapped around one end to protect your hands. Many cuts can be made with a standard utility knife or a kitchen knife having a serrated edge... but check first with your significant other, if applicable, before using the "best" knife in the house on foam tombstones... the tables might turn on you.

Distressing can be accomplished by carving or better yet, by sanding. If you take a look at my finished stones, you'll note the edges are rounded over and not very straight... depicting a very old stone that's seen many, many years of neglect and aging. All of those effects were done by sanding the foam with a coarse grit sandpaper. Remember, when sanding, always wear a dust mask or filter... foam fibers are extremely hazardous if breathed in. Be safe.
