Our prop obelisk will be constructed of lightweight, extruded foam boards... those types often used
in building construction. Commonly called "blue" or "pink" foam, you'll find them at home improvement
centers or the local lumber yard. Don't confuse the foam we will use in this construction with the "white"
colored foam, or styrofoam. Styrofoam is commonly made up of tiny, little pellets of foam glued together.
Also, styrofoam does not have the strength or workability you'll find in the extruded foam boards. You
can tell if it's styrofoam by rubbing an edge with your fingernail where little, roundish flecks pop
off of the foam. You do not want to use styrofoam.
There are two common sizes of extruded foam
boards (as far as width and height go). There's either: 2'x8' or 4'x8'. Again commonly, the depth, or
thickness, varies from 3/4" to 2"; so, there's quite a selection to choose from. For this project, approximately
two sheets of 2'x8'x1" thick and one sheet of 2'x8'x2" thick foam were used.
