This tutorial deals specifically with a more involved, decorative tombstone (although, not the one
shown here) and how to accomplish steps required to have ornate, built-up profiles and carvings.
Everything performed here, except for the carving itself, has been demonstrated in depth in my other
tutorials covering tombstones and obelisks. Be sure to read through them too. All materials and tools
are exactly the same as building a very simple tombstone. So, much of this tutorial will deal with differences
between what's already been covered and what's unique to this tombstone.
Although I feel most
cuts can be accomplished with more manual hand tools, I suggest it's time to bring out the heavy hardware.
I use a bandsaw to make almost all cuts in the foam. It's not that I need the bandsaw's power to cut
through foam, it's that the tool provides me with the ability to concentrate on the cut, or the shape
the cut is giving me, rather than how well the cut is proceeding. My bandsaw is big, but I know there
are hobby-sized, or benchtop, versions of bandsaws available to consumers. I highly recommend you look
into acquiring one, if not for this project, but all your future ones.
