3D Canvas Pirate Ship

I wanted to build a pirate ship out of wood, but I don't want to have to store that much wood in my yard

Taking the idea of my good friend Matt who did a Castle Facade out of canvas drop cloth, I embarked on creating wood textured planks on canvas.

Canvas Castle Facade idea conceived by Matt

I had to create a 3D frame out of 1/2" conduit with crushed ends and L brackets. The ship is 5 ft wide and 16 ft long.

The Canvas is painted with a brown/tan color as the back color and then I traced wood plank shapes with a Brown Sharpie

I used a Raw Umber Velspar glaze and a wood graining tool to create wood planks on the canvas.

Pirate Ship with half of the canvas grained. The ships wheel is a wagon wheel from HarborFreight.com for $13 on sale with wood dowels for handles.

The Pirate Ship is framed with 1/2" electrical metal conduit at $2 per 10ft from Home Depot.

I put up a mast 15 ft tall with 2" ABS pipe and a ABS Cross with a 10ft span for the sails made of Tule (black light reactive)

Pirates wheel is on oscillating spot light holder and on lazy susan ball bearing.

Framing is done with 1/2" conduit and the ends crushed and drilled.

The conduit for the frame is fabricated in the same way geodesic domes are done with conduit. It does beat up your vise quite a bit crushing the ends of the conduit.

Two tier platform is made in the center of the ship for actors to stand on and appear that they are in the 5ft tall ship

You can see the 6 LEDs at the end of the cannon that are rigged to trigger upon firing of the cannon. Baby powder pushed out by a styrofoam ball should look like smoke and the red LEDs shoud light it up.

Cannon is made with 8" dia concrete pour tube and 2" foam rings and can fire 2.5" styrofoam plug pneumatically.
