CAUTION: Early movie spoilers ahead.
This movie is a hardcore revenge flick that does not hold back on the extreme violence. It stars Kevin Bacon as Nick Hume, a
loving husband and father of two teenage boys. One night while him and his eldest son Brendan are stopped at a local gas
station, they end up finding out they are at the wrong place at the wrong time. The Nick is filling up the gas tank of the
car while Brendan tells him that he is going to go into the store to get a drink, Nick quickly tells him to hurry as they
need to get going and continues filling the tank. Soon two cars filled with masked gang members with knives and guns drive
up and they rush into the store into a robbery. Brendan is terrified as the clerk ends up being blown away with one of the
shot guns as the gang taunt Brendan who is frozen with fear. Nick turns and realises whats happening in the store and turns
to run towards the store yelling Brendan's name. He screams as he sees one of the masked robbers take a machete to Brendan's
neck taking him down. Before he gets to the store the robbers flee to their cars just as the father is able to pounce on one
of the robbers and unmasking him revealing the young gang member's face as he gets up and tries to run after his speeding
away gang buddies and ends up getting hit by a car. Nick rushes into the store to check on Brendan and applies pressure to
the neck wound and screams for help. Nick rushes his son to the hospital but just as his wife and son arrive the doctor
informs them it is too late.
This eventually leads to Nick identifying the apprehended gang member he unmasked in a police line and the case goes to
trial. With the accused kid mocking Nick in the court room and being cocky, he is set free and not charged. Nick ends up
broken up and hunts the kid down and in the heat of beating the kid up he ends up stabbing him and killing him which starts a
horrific avenging war by the gang members set on hunting him and his family down with intent on cold blooded murder of his
other son and wife. Nick suffers more murder and more pain. In the end Nick has more than a score to settle with the
remaining gang members and ends up risking it all, loads up on guns and lots of bullets, locks and loads and sets out to hunt
every last one of them down and blow them away without mercy!
I definitely enjoyed this movie. I love revenge movies and this story is one of just an ordinary family man with a desk job
who suffers horrific family murders and is driven over the edge. Not some cop or military person trained to take action.
Based on the novel by the same author who penned the Charles Bronson 70s cult classic 'Death Wish' and directed by the
director of the original 'Saw' film. I also appreciated the fact that the movie is not like the 'goodie two shoes' typical
Hollywood action movies with lots of gun fire but only guns are seen firing and just have the bad guys falling down dead and
wounded but no realistic gruesome violence. This movie has plenty of that. Here when guns are fired, we see the bloody shot
gun wounds and blown off limbs clearly. No sugar coating here. The movie came out in theaters everywhere on Aug 31st, 2007. I would definitely give the movie a five star rating. I
definitely will be owning this on DVD!
