Aunt Jane died sometime between 1842 and 1861, who she was remains a mystery. It is known that she was murdered, and that her ghost appears at the fort's ruins.
There are more than one view of her story, one of which is how she died. Who killed her is not known. It is speculated that it was either thieves or rogue soldiers, and she migt have been beheaded in the process.
Once, her ghost, dressed in a white gown, was seen by a young woman near the fort. The ghost was without a head. The woman didn't say how she knew in was Aunt Jane.
Even her being without a head is in question. Another witness says that her ghost occationally rides through Fort Washita, her long black hair blowing in the wind.
Why she was murdered is not as questionable as who killed her. It is said that she had a secret stash of money somewhere at the fort and was killed by blackguards in an attempt to find out where the money was. Even though there have been many searches for the money it has never been found.
One man reported that, even though he didn't see her, the ghost stopped him from digging "some force would hold the pick and not let it touch the ground."
Dr. Stalcup, a physician near Fort Washita, said that Aunt Jane's ghost plagued him for many years. When his daughter was born, he said that the ghost occasionally "possessed" her. One night the ghost threatened to cut off all the girls hair. Only when her mother fell to her knees and prayed did the ghost end her threats!
